Our Roots: A Pioneer in Community Support
Founded in 1988, the Brain Injury Association Peterborough Region (BIAPR) was the very first community-based brain injury association to provide dedicated service to the Counties of Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes (formerly Victoria County), Haliburton, and Northumberland.
In our foundational early years, we operated strictly as a self-sustaining grassroots connection point. Our small initial framework focused on establishing localized support groups and providing an essential lifeline through active outreach phone calls to caregivers, loved ones, and families trying to make sense of the sudden complexities of brain trauma.
Growth, Professionalization & Space Evolution
As the regional density and complex medical needs of our community expanded, BIAPR evolved in tandem. A major turning point occurred in 2010 when, with the dedicated infrastructure backing of the Central East LHIN, we successfully relocated our operational hub to a fully accessible, state-of-the-art, barrier-free facility located right in the heart of Peterborough. This vital physical milestone radically expanded our capacity to host regular on-site services, establish complex programmatic interventions, and strengthen localized institutional healthcare partnerships.
Today, BIAPR stands as a dynamic, professional agency. We deploy a specialized range of community supports, structured day services, and professional care planning paths designed explicitly for individuals with diverse, long-term cognitive and motor needs. We remain an actively registered, non-profit charitable organization funded primarily through Ontario Health East.
